ERTC Weekly Update - Week of January 19

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of January 19

Note about our XC Ski Lessons and Offerings: Lessons are targeted to folks with at least a season of skiing under their belt, have grasped the basics of forward movement in their cross country skiing (ie, diagonal stride for classic (“the shuffle”), and offset for skate (ski one one side, and both poles and ski on other side) - note about offset, you’ll have to unlearn it, but it is what most self-taught folks end up doing by default) and are looking to refine their existing technique. In order to be respectful of the other participants, please do not attend unless you meet this requirement. The lessons also have a nominal cost ($15-20/lesson) to cover the dedicated time and training that Jay needs to put on these lessons. I will be putting up the payment portal soon, and you will be retroactively charged starting with the lesson on January 18.

If you’re still new, our “open” group skis are for you, where you can learn from other clubmates in passing. These will be up on strava.

Second - Trek Night is CONFIRMED for January 30th, from 6:30m-8:30pm. If you’re new here, or need a reminder, Trek Night is hosted by Hardcore Bikes (10008 Whyte Ave NW) and on that night we are treated to ERTC-only discounts on Trek and Bontrager items. Selected Discounts Below:

  • 30% off all bontrager/trek parts and accessories. Shoes, helmets, lights, tires, etc. There will be a full size selection of things like helmets and shoes for you to try on.

  • 10% off carbon wheels.

  • 15% off of rapha

  • Bike discounts available on a per bike basis.

  • If something isn’t in stock but falls into the category above, you can order it at the special price.

There will be snacks and alcoholic/non-alcoholic beverages, so it’s a great excuse to hang out with clubmates in the dead of winter. Please RSVP here so we have numbers:  https://forms.gle/SM6EHzpbRhRBUe8Q9

Club Updates:

  • Thanks to Adrian Richards for putting together a strength program for us! There are 3 commitment levels and you can review them here: https://www.ertc.org/winter-strength-training - Adrian is currently on holiday and will be back at the end of January.

  • The new Jakroo webstore is in progress - we will be throwing the links up once that is all ready!

Velodrome Updates:

  • Activity Messenger Linkie: https://activitymessenger.com/org/4494/

  • Please continue to RSVP on both Activity Messenger and strava, however only RSVP on Activity Messenger if you are certain you are able to attend, and if you must bow out, to let somebody know ahead of time, as slots are limited to ensure a good experience for everyone and to ensure we are not in violation of safety regulations. We recommend only RSVPing for sessions 1 week in advance, as it has happened where people RSVP for multiple sessions in advance and have forgotten / no showed.

  • Additional time and certification session discussions with the AVA are underway, as many other clubs are requesting additional time at the velodrome as well. We will have updates for you when we have figured something out. Preliminary discussions likely have additional club time for all clubs on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings.

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of January 12

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of January 12

First of all, I want to take this opportunity to introduce Jay Smith(She/Her) as our XC Ski Program Coordinator and Coach. Jay will be taking the reins in coordinating our XC skiing programming, with other members of the club including (but not limited to) Mike, Kurt, Aaron, Robin and others supporting her as pace leaders for group skis, or as assistant coaches. If you want to contribute please let Jay or I know. Jay will also be leading and hosting both Skate and Classic Technique Lessons for us. These lessons will assume some familiarity on skis (more than a season). Lessons will have a small fee associated with them, however group skis are totally free!

Some more about Jay:

Jay is an experienced nordic ski coach and instructor, with NCCP and CANSI training. As an instructor, she believes in teaching good technique through intuitive body awareness. Her favourite technique is skate, her favourite terrain is hilly, and she loves technical descents.

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of January 5

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of January 5

Little earlier for this one this week, as I wanted to give everyone a little more time prior to our track session.

This is the second last update using the 2025 mailing list. I will be sending out one more e-mail in the spring reminding people to register prior to their first outdoor rides this year, but if you want to stay in the know, you should either register, or join us on slack, where weekly updates will continue to be posted. You cannot join in any official ERTC activities until you are registered. This includes: gym sessions, organized group XC skis (on strava), Trek Night, etc. If you are participating in just Zwift or pick-up rides and skis, then you don’t have to register right now for those.

This is also a reminder that you are required to be a member in order to attend the track session on January 5th and all subsequent sessions, as our insurance coverage for 2025 lapsed on December 31st. We will be checking if you are a member when you sign in for track. You will be asked to sit out if you are not a current member.

If you are looking to be a secondary member with us, you can register for a secondary membership here: https://zone4.ca/register.asp?id=40798 - your primary club will be required to affiliate with the ABA prior, and you will be asked to provide their contact information so I can verify this. If you aren’t sure if your primary club has affiliated yet, ask your team manager/president for confirmation.

If they haven’t yet, you’ve got 2 options:

  • Sit out of ERTC activities until they have, and sign up as a secondary member

  • Sign up with ERTC as your primary.

If cost of registration is an issue, let me know! We can probably work something out in exchange for volunteer time or otherwise helping out somehow.

You can read about registration and register here: https://www.ertc.org/registration

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of December 29

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of December 29

Hey everyone!

I’m not used to writing these things during the winter so uh… Happy New Year! Let’s get right into it cause I’m sure you’ve got places to be, people to see, and celebrations to have!

Registration is open for 2026 - We have had several people reporting issues with the registration process, however, if you want Velodrome access in 2026, starting January 5th, you will need to register, so please take a read on how it will work for 2026 and register here: https://www.ertc.org/registration - we are actively working with CCNBikes and the ABA to have the issues resolved.

There are 2 separate issues:

  1. The first issue seems to be affecting the “Community Membership” Option - which most of you will be getting. The option simply doesn’t show up. If you intend on getting a racing license (either a provincial (Citizen) license, or a full UCI license, this should not affect you). If this affects you, and you intend on attending the velodrome in the new year (either continuing riding, or to get your certifications with ERTC) please let me know, so we can see how many people we need to look for a solution for in the meantime. Please try to register first as it seems to be sporadic.

  2. The second issue seems to be that the checkout process may not complete, and you may register for the ABA portion, but not the ERTC portion. I cannot check if this has affected you. If you did everything correctly, you will have both a confirmation email for registering for the ABA, and a confirmation email for registering with ERTC. If you do not have one or the other, please let me know. Your credit card should also note 2 separate charges, again, one to the ABA, and one to us. Again, please try to register first as it seems to be sporadic.

  3. If anything seems weird at all, please let me know.

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of December 22

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of December 22

Hey everyone! Lots of exciting news this week, so buckle in, we’ve got some light holiday reading for you!

Registration for the 2026 season is open. Due to the scheduling of winter velodrome, we are starting registration early, as our first session in the New Year is January 5th. Please register prior to January 5th to ensure you are able to attend in the new year. The membership covers you for events starting January 1st through December 31, 2026.

The registration process will look a little different this year, as we have been required to move to CCNBikes for our registration platform. Overall, it is fairly straight forward, but you probably want to be sitting at a computer to work through it. The biggest difference is that the ABA Membership portion and cost is broken out separately and it is within this “sub checkout” where you will select your membership level (Community, Provincial(Citizen), or UCI). For most of you, just click Community. It will be $53, and subsequently, the amount that we charge will still be the same as our 2026 plan (ie. we charge $150, and the ABA charges $53, for a total of $203, plus processing fees). A community membership level is appropriate for you if you just want to participate in ERTC weekly rides, ABA Fondos, and midweek inter-club racing, or track league. As usual the process shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes, but can be confusing.

Note that the “Summer Velodrome Access” is a placeholder deposit and is an indicator of interest in summer Velodrome access. Once a schedule has been worked out for summer access, an actual cost will be calculated and either you will be asked to pitch in more, or be partially refunded. Your regular fee already includes winter velodrome access (as it does now).

If you are racing, or plan on racing, at the provincial level or higher, you can pay for your license as part of this process. This will charge you the full racing license amount as well. We will have a seminar later on in the season about how it all works and how to register but you can go ahead and get that out of the way now if you like. A racing license is approximately $200 (instead of the $53 you would pay as a community member). Make sure you pick UCI Racing License (and NOT the “Unaffiliated +$15$) one.

As part of this, the upgraded insurance is also part of the sub-checkout. The details remain the same in terms of coverage, and so does the pricing. Liability Coverage and limited paramedical coverage for all club rides is included in the $53. Additional coverage for “Individual training” is available for an additional $20, and “Anytime on a bike” coverage is available for an additional $100.

When you complete the sub-checkout, you will be returned to “our” registration, where we ask you the usual questions about emergency concerns, and our opt-in programs. Any questions about any part of the process can be directed at me, on slack, or via email; however, if it's part of the ABA “sub-checkout” process, I will forward them to the ABA if I cannot help you. Please do let me know since it helps me better answer them for people who are also having trouble, as well as working with the ABA to iron out any wrinkles. I have ran several test registrations and a real one (for myself) so it should all be working now. Your receipt will show 2 different entities, both us, and the ABA, as your cart automatically splits and remits to the ABA and us, respectively.

You will also note that there is an additional “registration insurance.” You can purchase that is based on a % of your total fee in case of something being out of your control happens and you want a refund. This is a service that is offered by the registration platform and NOT us. Our refund policy continues to be “no refunds after June 1st, or a month after join, whichever comes sooner.” Any other reasons will be evaluated on a case to case basis. I can’t say if this is worth it to you or not, as everyone has a different view on insurance and risk.

I recommend everyone making an account at CCNBikes as it is very likely that more events and registrations will be moving to this platform in 2026. It is overall smoother and less error prone than Zone4, and eases paperwork on the backend.

Now that you’ve read all that, here is the link! https://ccnbikes.com/#!/events/29306-edmonton-road-and-track-club

Club Updates:

Ride Updates:

  • Watch Slack and Strava for pick-up rides.

Racing/Event/ABA Updates:

  • ABA AGM Report (The Coles Notes) - The ABA has dug themselves out of the deficit position they have run in previous years and is now expected to be cash flow neutral/slightly positive, with the addition of new grant funding that was recently added to the list. The new board is well rounded, with members representing  all disciplines, and not just a heavy emphasis on youth / BMX racing. I expect the minutes to be released in short order. I was planning on revisiting my position on the Race Committee, however upon seeing the nominees for the Race Committee, believe them to be capable of doing a great job.

General Reminders:

  • Official Rides are posted on strava. If you haven’t requested to join, please do so here: https://www.strava.com/clubs/2845 if you’ve applied and haven’t heard back, e-mail me, but first, make sure your strava name matches your registration name.

  • Day to day communication and general chatter is via slack. You can join here: https://join.slack.com/t/edmontonroada-7u36621/shared_invite/zt-1t5qvezds-JotWB~e_EJcXrD9NArQarA - this is where you can get real time updates about unofficial rides, talk bikes with club members, and sell your stuff to other club members! If you identify as female and would like to be included in the WoERTC communications and event announcements, please message Heather Curtis on Slack to be added to the private WoERTC channel. Please remember to use the “reply in thread” feature when using slack (especially in the general channel, think about all the group chats you are in, general is like a 400 person group chat)

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of November 3

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of November 3

Hey everyone! A little more official one this week!

First things first, our AGM is coming up! It will be either December 5 or 6th, location TBD. Please complete the RSVP if you are interested in attending. During our AGM, we review our financials, talk about what we did well, what we did poorly, and how we plan on changing for the upcoming season. We also do elections for our club executive. This year, Heather’s (Women’s Coordinator) and Scott’s Position (Vice-President) are up for election. They will both be letting their names stand for re-election, however if you want to review the responsibilities, you can do so here: https://www.ertc.org/the-executive-team and the process to getting on the board is relatively simple. Anyone may attend, vote, and/or run.

If you are interested in a position, another member may nominate you, and another member must second it. This is best done at the AGM in person. If you cannot attend, and still wish to run, you will need to have the nominator start a document, sign it with a second name and signature, and you must forward it to us.

We always have great food, and a few beverages at the AGM, and we are in the process of looking for a new venue as the clubhouse at the velodrome is no longer available to us. The plus side of this is that we have the flexibility to stay a bit later!

Please RSVP here: there is no need to RSVP if you do not plan on attending. https://forms.gle/h9SRr4GSihtprya66

Additionally, every year we send out a member survey - reviewing this survey tells us how we can do better for next year! Please fill it out. It is completely anonymous so you can be as harsh as you want ;) https://forms.gle/crPhnAPXsihNmUSH8

Alright, the last official note for tonight is that the AGM for the ABA is coming up on November 13 at 7:00pm(virtually). If you were here last year, there was a large shake up in the board with several members resigning, and staff leaving. There is no such “crisis” this year.

ERTC is affiliated with the ABA and leans on them for insurance and race resources, and as members of ERTC you are also members of the ABA. You have the right to attend and vote and you can RSVP here: https://form.jotform.com/252826208088260 - it will ask for your ABA License Number. If you have one, please enter it. If you do not have one, enter in “ERTC CM” as your license number. I (Albert Nguyen) will also be attending. If you want to empower me with your proxy vote to vote in the interest of the club, then you may do so here: https://form.jotform.com/252731343391252 - you may also nominate someone for a position on the ABA board - you can do that here: https://form.jotform.com/252731136599060

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of October 27

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of October 27

There might be some flakes coming from the sky but that doesn’t mean the updates stop!

Some track clarifications:

Now that we are in the swing of things at the track, it will be extremely hard for you to take certification sessions for no cost as part of our group, as due to the sizes of our groups, it is hard for our coaches to catch you up individually. As such, if you have not already attended your first track certification session, we can no longer accommodate you.

Your options are as follows:

  1. Independently taking the certification / accreditation sessions and joining us on the track after our certification sessions for our practice sessions - sign up for the public certification sessions here: https://activitymessenger.com/org/4494, or

  2. Waiting until the New Year where we will run more certification sessions. Note that you will not be able to access the track until your sessions are completed.

  3. If you want to discuss taking half of the public sessions to "catch up" and then joining us on track for the remainder of our sessions, that may but it would be highly dependent on where the respective groups are in their learning streams.

Only important updates regarding the Velodrome will be noted in these emails going forward. We highly suggest that you join the velodrome slack channel at https://edmontonroada-7u36621.slack.com/archives/C027D7U7N68 for day-to-day updates on happenings.

Also note that for continued track access after December 31st, you will need to renew your ERTC membership prior to attending your first session in the new year.

Also, we are happy to announce the beginning of our drop-in strength sessions at the Gym at the Velodrome - no RSVP needed. You may have seen the gym while you were out at the track! We will put an RSVP for the sessions up on strava but this is mostly to gauge interest. These are self-coached (unless someone wants to step up and put together a training plan or circuit). It’s a great way to work out with other people to work on the specific muscle groups you need to track cycling! We have a dedicated timeslot for ERTC members on Wednesdays, from 7 to 8pm.

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of October 20

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of October 20

The Croken Classic this weekend was an incredible success with the most attendees we’ve ever had, and somehow the weather managed to hold out our one last celebration of gravel this year! A huge thank you to all of our club participants, and in no particular order, people from the club who helped out: Nina K, Nick C, Kyle E., Wanda M, Joe M., Mike C., Michelle C, Dan Z., Mike B., James G., and Tom M. - It was a couple long days but everyone’s smiles and all the thanks from everyone afterwards made it all worth it!

As we’ve flooded you with information about the track in recent weeks, it's time to give you a little more information about our other winter activities over the next coming weeks. First up on our list is indoor virtual training! ERTC plans on running a seminar in the coming weeks about what trainers to get, what programs are out there, and what other hardware to get. In my opinion it's the best way to hit the ground running in the spring, as much as it might suck sometimes! Keep an eye out for the strava invite as we’ve found it’s the best way to track RSVPs (even though its virtual).

We plan on providing a regular weekly group ride people can participate in via Zwift (if that is your poison of choice), as well as fielding both a Co-ed and Women’s ZRL (Zwift Racing League) team. We are working on getting the weekly meet-up together, however if you are interested in racing virtually, message Dan Zeggelaar for information on joining the Co-Ed team and Wanda Mauricio for information on the Women’s team.

You can join our indoor training channel here: https://edmontonroada-7u36621.slack.com/archives/C0210LNB59Q - it’s a direct link to the channel in slack.

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of October 13

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of October 13

Hey everyone - if you missed last week’s update -  ERTC’s first session at the new Velodrome is October 20, 8-9pm! With all future dedicated ERTC track time sessions until the end of March taking place at the same time slot, Monday nights from 8-9pm.

The first 5 sessions at the track will be a certification and accreditation process for all riders, required for ALL riders at the track. You will be required to attend at least 4.

Due to overwhelming demand, we are opening a SECOND set of sessions on THURSDAYS between 7pm and 8pm. As we want to limit total ridership to 20 for these initial sessions to give everyone a good learning experience. ERTC is buying additional track time to make this happen so that everyone can participate this year. We will have 4 sessions as well on Thursdays. So for right now, we are asking for volunteers from Monday sessions to switch to Thursdays, or if you couldn’t make Mondays, then you can come to these ones!

Our coaches for our track sessions are homegrown ERTCers Amanda and Chris (CJ).

Amanda Scott has been riding track since 2016, and likes to have fun riding fast with friends. She has been coaching ERTC track sessions since 2023 and completed her NCCP Intro to Community Coaching in 2025, and is working on completing her Intro to Competition coach training next year. Amanda is looking forward to seeing a wide range of riders at the new indoor velodrome!

Chris Jugo is our coach in training for the track bringing instructional experience as a ski instructor and is a 3rd year with the AVA Sport Performance Academy in sprint. Participates in the Kilo, Individual Sprint and Keirins.

More information is available on the strava events.

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of October 6

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of October 6

Hey everyone - as you might have heard, the Coronation indoor velodrome is opening up *really* soon! As ERTC members, access to the new velodrome and its benefits are afforded to you as part of your membership. As such, I am happy to announce that ERTC’s first session at the new Velodrome is October 20, 8-9pm! With all future dedicated ERTC track time sessions until the end of March taking place at the same time slot, Monday nights from 8-9pm.

So what does this mean? How does this all work? HOW DO I START RIDING?!

  • The new velodrome is a bit steeper and has a wooden surface, so will require a full certification and accreditation process for all riders, with only exceptions being those who have raced on a wooden surfaced track in the last 2 years. This applies to exactly 1 person in our club, so suffice it to say that everyone in the club needs certification :)

  • This process is meant to help new riders learn how to ride on the track and to be safe riders, and the nuances of riding on a wooden track, and the intended audience is ANYONE WHO WANTS TO RIDE ON THE TRACK IN THE NEXT 13 WEEKS. You do not need any previous track experience to participate. These sessions also serve as an orientation to track cycling.

  • The plan for the first half of our winter season is as follows: Starting October 20, there will be a series of 5, 1 hour long sessions. You will be required to attend at least 4 of these sessions prior to participating in any further track activities. Again, we stress that everyone needs to do this prior to riding in this facility. While we recognize that people might be busy and not be able to commit for the full term, you will not be able to participate until the next block of certification sessions. There may be a make up session in the middle, however your best bet to getting on the track as soon as you can is to complete the 4 sessions. The invite to these sessions will be on strava.

  • After the first 5 weeks, we will launch into a rider progression program aimed at making you a safer, more skilled rider, and work on skills and tactics that will culminate in an event where you can show off what you learned in a race (if you want to)!

  • Velodrome riding is goal focused - we at ERTC believe that setting your sights on a goal or an event is one of the best ways you can stay motivated to reach your next level. As part of our agreement with the track, our time on the track will be supported with roller time beforehand, and time for strength training in the dedicated gym (time TBD).

  • You do not need to have a track bike, as there will be track bikes available for you to use. If you are using a loaner bike, please consider bringing a set of pedals you want to use (or you will have to use running shoes and toe clips), and a saddle if you are picky about those.

  • You should bring your usual cycling kit (for riding in approximately 21 degrees, even in the middle of winter!), a helmet, gloves, and shoes.

  • If you want to “skip the line” for certification and have a Saturday and Sunday free back to back, AVA is offering certification as a weekend course to the public,  for people who don’t have a club certification program or can’t make the time that their club has.  You can choose to register in these instead, but the cost is not covered by the club, and is $60 each day. More information will be posted when we have it.

ERTC Owns 3 bike bags - 1 of them is missing. If you have borrowed it recently and you aren’t on vacation right now, let me know!

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of September 22

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of September 22

I want to extend a heartfelt thank you for everyone’s help this weekend at our CX race this weekend. I’ve always seen CX as a celebration of cycling with the largest range of ages (from 10 to 67 this year!) competing, along with families and their kids, oftentimes in the same race!  This undertaking wouldn’t have been possible with the support of (and sorry if I missed you): Aaron F., Greg N., Greg P., James G., Kurt M., Wanda M., Mike C., Gavin R., Helen P., Michelle C., Morgan P., Robin B., Jay S., Jacob D., Ash D., Kat D., Burr H., Amanda S., Leo D., Heather M., Hanna D., Teresa P., Joe M., Danielle H. (and hubby), Jason C., and Michael H. The smiles on everyone’s faces made the effort everyone put in worth it!

Onto a different topic - I had sent out a note about this awhile back but with the current goings-on in our schools, it was about time to remind everyone: ERTC continues to welcome any gender identity and sexual orientation into our membership.  Members observed to not support this direction will be asked to change their behaviour or be asked to leave the club. For all of our events (including the provincial level ones) that we host, all entrants may continue to participate as their self-identified gender.

The WoERTC rides are welcoming of anyone who self-identifies as a woman, be it cisgender, transgender, or genderqueer -  if this definition doesn’t align with your identification, but you identify with the focus of this group, come join us! We value inclusivity over the requirement to be fully defined by this statement.

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of September 8
